Fred is slightly shorter than most llamas, probably due to some alpaca blood from his ancestors. His dark brown hairs make the majority of his body appear black. He also has a large white patch on his belly, a sock on his left hind leg, and a primarily white face. Fred was always teased for never fully growing into his large ears, and was almost renamed Radar. When he was domesticated his owners had kept his face trimmed very short, but ever since arriving on the island the hair had grown out, and it was quite bothersome for Fred.

Fred is a very sarcastic person, and his sense of humor stems from this irony. Fred, however, uses the sarcasm to allow himself to hide from the truth, and he is hardly ever serious. Some people (or animals) around him find the sarcasm very annoying, others find it absolutely hilarious. Fred's favorite past times include napping in long grass, making others laugh, and target-spitting. His hairy face, other sarcastic people, and cloudy days bother Fred.

Fred grew up on a llama farm in the US Midwest. He never met his father, and hardly remembers his mother. His closest friends were the fellow weanlings that he grew up with. By the age of 1 and a half his owners had gone bankrupt (blame the economy) and had the let all of the llamas run wild because they could not afford the food. He and two females escaped onto another farmer's property where they hid amongst some cows, eating their hay. One day the farmer noticed that there were some extra hairies in his field and called the humane society to pick them up. Knowing the chances of three llamas being adopted was rare, the humane society added Fred and his two lady friends to the boat headed to Gershom.
