[bg=ef7e8b][atrb=width,450,true][atrb=border,0,true][cs=7] Niabi raised her head from the soft ground. Sleeping beside a pond had some major pros, including the damp morning air, and the softer ground. She raised herself on to her spindly legs and took the few steps to the pond. Catching her reflection in the water she was shocked. Apparently it also has some cons, like being a muddy mess.
Niabi had found her way to the foot lands not long after being dropped out of the boat. Here she had kept away from other animals, and had laid a stake on this small pond. It didn't seem like there were many other mammals in this place. She had spotted fish in the pond, the sun catching their fins last night at dusk, and birds flapping overhead, but nothing that preferred the soil.
Dropping her head, Niabi ignored the disgusting image of her self-reflecting back on her and quickly gulped back the fresh water. She raised her dainty head again, water droplets rolling off her muzzle and splashing back to the pool, ripples of excitement floated back, rejoicing the return of the lost drop. She noticed the first strings of pink splattered out around the summit of one of the mountains. Although the sun couldn't yet be seen, it was on its way up. The pure silence of the morning was broken by loud ringing shots. Shots unheard on the island, only within Nia's head. She closed her eyes and attempted to think of something else, anything else, deciding to step into the pond and clean both her fur and her mind.
She looked around, quickly, scouting anywhere that predators could lurk. She decided the area was clear, nothing large enough to bother her could possibly be hiding behind the ground scrub, and started to step gingerly into the water. It was chilly, but it allowed for Nia to both wake up and completely forget about the past.

[bg=11212f][atrb=width,450,true][atrb=border,0,true][cs=7] As the first rays of sun began peeking over the horizon, a small squirrel began to stir in his nest, which was nestled high into the branches of a tree. It should be noted that it wasn't actually his nest, but an abandoned nest which he had found and decided to make use of. It had been in good repair, and had only taken a bit of twig-snatching from below the tree for him to rebuild it into a nest of comfort. It was perfectly natural that he did such a thing, at least for him. He wasn't the type to stay in one place and settle down for too long, so building his own nest seemed a bit absurd.
This morning, he cracked open his eyes, noting that it was only just beginning to be daylight. A loud yawn escaped his tiny mouth, but he stayed curled in his sleeping position, his large fluffy tail wrapped around him, providing not just comfort and warmth, but a sense of safety. He closed his eyes again and breathed deeply, before finally fully opening his eyes and sitting up. He stretched, and then put his front claws on the edge of his nest, peering down upon the world below.
His position was not too far from a small pond, and he heard the sounds of water splashing softly as a creature submersed in it. He chattered to himself as he spied on the pond for a few minutes, noting to himself that it seemed pretty boring besides the one creature he'd heard stepping into the water. It seemed to be swimming around, or at least soaking in the crisp coolness for a few minutes, so he decided he was safe to make his escape.
He crawled out of his nest, and then expertly navigated his way down the trunk of the tree, clinging on with his claws and making sure to avoid conking his head on any stray branches. A few seconds later, he reached the base of the tall oak. The squirrel stood for a moment, staring again at the pond, and then finally took off at a scampering run to investigate. He's naturally a curious sort, which has led him into trouble more than once, but he never quite seems to learn his lesson. From this distance, he wasn't sure just what the animal was, but the fact that it was something which could probably eat him in one bite didn't seem to make him any more concern.
His bounding pace made it a quick journey over to the pond, where he found himself finally able to see the figure of the deer. The sun was rising a bit higher, sending fragments of light down to the land, which was still shielded by shadows from trees and other small scrub. He chittered to himself in the way that only a squirrel could, and then moved a few places closer to the deer, hoping it might finally take notice of him.
His voice rang out a little too cheerful and loud for the early morning stillness, also a bit squeaky. Hi there! I'm Pigg! Who are you? His words ran together quickly, each sentence seeming to come out in one breath, so one had to be focused to get everything he said. His coffee eyes twinkled with bits of light as he continued to talk in an excited tone. Seems quiet this morning! Pity. I was hoping to find some adventure today. He continued babbling a bit, most of it nonsense chatter, waving his small arms excitedly as he spoke. One thing is for sure, Pigg certainly wasn't capable of being called shy.

Niabi i hope that you see right through my walls ---------------
Nia was thoroughly enjoying the relaxing bath. The cold water expelled the negative thoughts of her past from her mind and replaced them with simple feelings of pleasure. The gun shots that had previously rang in her ears were replaced with harmonious melodies. The pink that stained the sky went from reminding her of blood to a flower-filled meadow. Her entire outlook flipped simply from immersing herself in the small pool. Although she knew better than leave herself vulnerable in the middle of the open expanse of land there was a large part of her that begged to forget the risks, to just stand there, resting.
She focused on her breathing for a few moments, there was no other sound to listen to, and the rhythmic in-out-in-out relaxed Nia even further. Soon she realized she couldn't stand in the pond all day, it wasn't safe, it wasn't healthy, plus it was plain stupid. She ran through the things she needed to get done over the next few days, A new, more sheltered home. That was a priority, she would need to start looking later today, right after she found more than grasses to eat. Most likely, a berry bush would be found nearby some sort of low lying shrubbery that could act as a shelter. She also needed to scope the area for other animals. Deers weren't hunters, they were prey and in order to be sure she was safe in this area she needed to look around and be sure that there were no canines nearby. So far, she hadn't seen signs of anything living, but that didn't mean that they weren't here, animals could be stealthy.
Suddenly a squeaky voice behind her cause Niabi to nearly bolt. She was a millisecond from running head first straight towards the tree line. She would have run and run until she collapsed, it was her nature. It was the way she was bred. But the voice was not menacing, it sounded small, almost familiar. So, against her better judgment, Nia turned slowly to face the direction the sound had come from. But she couldn't see anything. That was when it dawned on her. The voice sounded like the chipmunks from her home, her old home.
That was when she spotted it. The thing was fluffy, but a boring muted grey. Nothing could compare to the chipmunks she was used to, with their browns and little racing stripes. This thing was more like an overgrown rat that had a coat on. And it wasn't shutting up. She didn't really process what was spilling out of his mouth like water until he stopped the chattering and just stared at her. The words all stuck to one another, not even close to the careful pronunciation that Nia had been lectured in since birth.
And so, the two stood, staring at one another, neither speaking for a heartbeat. The silence that she had so welcomed a few moments earlier now felt awkward and out of place. Nia's brain moved as quickly as it could, listening to what the thing had said before, trying to remember any of it. She had picked up his name, Pigg. But he didn't look like a pig. Nia had seen pigs in Ontario, they were large and pink and not that hairy. And they certainly don't talk that much. She thought to herself. The rest of it blurred together, so Nia simply made up the next part of the conversation, she hoped that the fuzzy thing hadn't asked her any questions because she hadn't picked up any intonation but she didn't want to appear rude either.
I'm Nia. She said, she wasn't sure what else to say. Nia hadn't had another animal to interact with in some time. I'm new here. She added, the words sounded forced, even to her own ears. Still, she was stuck for conversation, and so she blurted out the only thought that had been sticking in her mind since she had spotted Pigg. What the heck are you? ---------------
