A lone mare wandered aimlessly across the prairie-like grasses, the fine dust that blew through the air also sticking to her copper and ivory coat. Her head hung low, forelock falling across her blue eye. She snorted as she walked, a sound that came from a mixture of disgust and boredom.
She hadn't see any other horses in days, though she'd smelled traces of scents time and again. It was just as well. She didn't want anyone. But still, she would like at least a glimpse of what she was up against in these vast open lands. They were fairly flat, with only a few low waves of hills. A few meager trees or scraggly bushes stood rooted in the earth, but not enough to create a true feeling of shelter.
It was hot, and dry. Not unbearable. In fact, it was probably better than a humid, clinging heat, except for the particles of dirt that filled the air with each stride she made. She snorted again, finding herself wonder how long it would be before she came to a more comfortable place to rest. She was the type who preferred the confined solitude of the forest, or even a cave. But out on these wide-open plains, she felt about as empty as they looked, and it was making her uneasy.

She finally came to a pause atop a small knoll of land and stood still, letting the casual breeze twine through her hair as it came in small bursts. She bent down and nipped a few blades of grass between her teeth. It was dry, and a little stalky, but she hadn't expected much else, given the state of the landscape surrounding her.
The mare grazed contentedly for awhile, while the sun beat down against her coat, the white blanket marking across her hips shining through the fine layer of dust that coated it. She heard the sounds of smaller wildlife skittering around. A squirrel, a rabbit, and a few slightly obnoxious sounding insects. With her nostrils buried in the tall grasses, she smelled nothing but the scents of the dry earth.
She didn't hear the stallion's approach until he was too near to think she could run away from him. She lifted her head and shifted her eyes across her options, but kept her hooves firmly planted where she stood. He came closer, moving in a sort of swagger that already pushed her buttons. When he finally grew close enough to greet her, she rolled her eyes and knew she was dealing with a flirty young stallion who probably thought he was the ruler of the world. Pfft. She'd just have to prove to him that his view on life was quite flawed.
She narrowed her eyes and swished her tail. "No, you may not," she spoke bluntly, her words cold and aloof. Her flaxen tail flicked annoyedly again, but she held her icy stare, not giving him an inch. "I don't see your name written anywhere, so you'll have to forgive me for passing through."

She was pretty, but quite icy. He silently nicknamed her the Ice Queen, but he would just turn her into a snapping turtle if he told her that. His warm brown eyes sparkled, not in the least put off by her brusque manners. Ni was not a stallion that was easily dissuaded when he put his mind to something, although the Ice Queen did have the potential to just swing her butt and kick him. Ni had quick enough reflexes for her, being of a bit more slender build than her, but he would probably try mounting before dodging.
You know, dear, that your blue eye is simply breathtaking. The icy daggers were definitely not finding their mark to dent his enthusiasm. Nizhoni was primly standing,, neck arched. It was a reflex, really, to stand like he owned the world. Well, he did own this piece of it, and she was standing on it, but that didn't change the fact that he would have had the same stance if they were in some unclaimed land or what have you. Nizhoni was just that kind of a stallion.
Oh, don't be in a hurry to leave, he stated, tossing his head. Delicate ears pricked in her direction, boundless energy forcing him to pace, cirling her with an appreciative eye, always staying out of strike range. Ni might be a foward stallion, but he was no fool. The Ice Queen could do some damage if she really wanted to, and Nizhoni was going to bide his time with her. He'd have to melt a little of her igloo before he was able to get in.
So, my dear, are there any more like you, perhaps a little nicer, around where you came from or are going? Ni hoped to put a little bit of jealosy in her heart, but he doubted his own dagger would get much farther than hers had. His eyes still twinkled mercilessly at her, daring her to snap or break the cold and calm exterior he was poking with a little anger or a little mirth.

Malaika snorted as the stallion spoke. Clearly, he thought he was quite the charmer. Well, he'd soon learn it would take more than a few flattering words to crack through the icy exterior of the heart. Some might say such a feat was impossible. Possible or not, it would take more than a little time, and a strategy made up of something other than flowery conversation.
She gave him a steady, defiant gaze as he spoke again. Already he was making himself out to be some kind of playboy, more interested in other mares than he was getting to know her. Not that she would have given him an inch of personal information...but still, a little interest on his part would have been nice. It might have even earned him a smidgen of respect. Instead, she grew more annoyed, and made no attempt to hide it. "No, it's just me. If you're in such a hurry to find someone else, why don't you just move along and I'll do the same? I'll be off your land before you know it and you'll probably never even remember I was here."
She swatted her tail at a persistent fly, stomping a foot in protest as well. Summer was not a pleasant time, between the sticky heat and the flying annoyances. Feeling another fly land on her barrel, she arched her heck around and clamped her teeth down on her own hide. She turned back to the stallion, wishing he'd go away, but knowing better than to simply turn her back on him and leave.

He rolled his eyes. Surely you know how to jest, my dear? he asked, not the least put off by her, but at least acknowledging that she didn't like him. Well, that was putting it mildly. He was sure she had come up with a million less pleasant names in her head for him, and that only led him to more merriment at her expense. I'm only in a hurry to find someone, and you seem to be convinced it isn't you. Since you have no one else to pawn me off to, you're stuck. He had definitely twisted his words to where they might be satisfactory, but he highly doubted she would accept it.
She was intriguing, if you will, and Nizhoni wasn't about to let her walk away. He was fascinated. She wasn't a weak mare just looking for love in her life. She was self serving and self satisfied, so what did she need him for? Well, he needed her, that was that. Out of the whole land, she was the only other horse he had seen. Nizhoni was definitely a herd animal; he needed mares around. It was part of his nature. He would valiantly fight, he would defend and protect. But first, he had to have someone to be under his care. He had been good at coaxing back with the humans and their horses, but they were used to needing someone else. This mare found herself enough, despite years of instinct that had tried to program her differently.
Nizhoni suddenly decided to play a different tactic. He had been moving just to expend energy, but what if he were to just graze, not annoy her further, but just stay with her? She had to break the silence eventually. Somehow Nizhoni doubted very highly that she would just break. She would just see it for the scheme that it was. He paused, wondering what else he could do. She was just standing, knowing he could potentially herd her (or mount...) if she tried to go away, knowing her best chances were to scare him off. That thought amused him. While she would be a formidable opponent, Ni was not scared of her. Brown eyes twinkled at her again, daring her to ask what was on his thoughts.
Go ahead. You might as well eat while you try to get the "bug off" message through my thick skull. The words were said with enough amusement to be sincere, but also probably enough to just grate further against her nerves. He had to admit, riling her up was amusing. Or well, just being around the Ice Queen was amusing. This demeanor seemed to be permanent. She wasn't throwing herself at him, wasn't trying to be ambitious and be lead, not trying to flaunt that she was in another herd, she was just here, annoyed, and she wouldn't do much about it. The torture rather amused him, perhaps even more than a mare receptive to his 'charm,' or whatever you want to call it.

The persistent stallion grew more aggravating the longer he hung around. He had some kind of cocky confidence that didn't allow him to be flustered by her cold exterior. Thoughts of how she might convince him she wasn't worth his time fatigued her, so she moved her weary mind onto other topics. Feeling confident that he wasn't a threat, she dropped her head down and began grazing, pretending to ignore everything he said.
She didn't bat an eyelash as he spoke again. No, she wouldn't give him the benefit of thinking she cared. She didn't care, not one little bit. The only thing she cared about was keeping herself safe, so as long as he kept his distance, she'd keep hers.
Noticing that he had grown quieter, and wasn't running around foolishly anymore, she peeked through a slit eyelid to see what he was doing. Oh, he was still there. That didn't surprise her, but she had the feeling he was up to something. She decided to push his buttons, continuing to ignore him but walking away from him a few yards to what he might assume was a better patch of grass. Maybe if she kept it up, casually moving from one patch of grass to another, he'd not notice until she was far enough away to get a head start and outrun him. Malai may be a mare, but she wasn't a oaf. She figured with a slight head start she could at least outrun him long enough to get off his land. That is, if she had any clue where the boundaries lay.
Unfortunately, she didn't. She also didn't know if any other stallions had land nearby, and what she might face if she did make it out of this spotted one's land. Sighing, she decided her plan wasn't worth the effort, and instead focused all her attention on grazing, simply pretending the stallion wasn't there. Malai continued to swat at flies, and found herself wondering how anyone could stand to live in such a place. It was so dry. There was no protective mud to roll in to keep the flies off. No shelter to hide beneath either. If the stallion thought for one second he could keep her on these lands, he clearly wasn't as smart as he thought he was.

She didn't dignify any of his comments with a response. That got beneath his guard, although he wasn't sure why. He shook his head. She obviously didn't like him, he'd have to make sure his feelings didn't get involved because she would take pleasure in crushing him. He refocused. She was still grazing, and he stayed silent, just watching her. She walked forward, and he cocked his head. She was done with him, that was clear, but he sensed there was more than that making her walk away.
He followed, clearly not convinced that he couldn't melt just a brick of the igloo and peek in at her. She was grazing, head down, and he became her lookout. He didn't speak to her, yet, but rather just observed. She was pretty, and he wondered if her self esteem was low enough that that was the cause of her wintry-ness. Then again, the male mind wasn't made to understand the female's. He figured it was probably safer for himself if he didn't ask questions and just observed to see if this was just her, or if there was a reason for her aloof and unfriendly manner.
She strolled as she grazed, and he kept pace. He wasn't entirely sure what to do now, but she seemed relaxed. She trusted him not to hurt her, but he was pretty sure the trust ended there. However, she was stuck with him. Even if she wandered off his land, which she was heading in the wrong direction for, he would probably follow and make sure she found her way back. She was pretty, he liked her, and he wanted her. It was as simple as that.
He looked at her carefully, and then reached out and began to softly groom her shoulder. Instead of being relaxed, which was the norm when displaying this behavior, he fully expected her to lash out, and he was ready to whip away if need be. Well, ready to whip away when she decided to attack. He had been around long enough that he knew she wouldn't tolerate him, but he was taking this in degrees. She could ignore his presence, his chatter, now he would teach her to ignore his touch. Or he'd try. She was the only mare in his herd, he had to have attention somehow.

Malai felt the stallion shadowing her as she moved, and decided he was smarter than she'd originally given him credit for. Still, he was clearly alone, which didn't speak well for his skills at obtaining mares. Surely if some other mares had outwitted him, she'd be able to do the same. Or maybe he was new to the island and happened to think this life in the wild would be a piece of cake. She snorted at the thought, lifting her head a few inches to gaze back at him.
He was a peculiar looking horse. An average size, an average built. But his coat was anything but average. She'd seen lots of spotted horses where she'd come from, being one of them herself, in a way. But never one like him, with such loud contrast between the creamy white of his coat and the bold, dark spots. She wouldn't say he was handsome, because she didn't understand feelings of attraction. She'd never let herself be attracted to a stallion in the past, and he was no different. Interesting to her curious mind? Yes. But nothing more than that.
She wasn't sure if he saw her lift her head or not, but as she sensed him coming closer she quickly clamped her teeth down on another bit of grass, pretending once again to be entirely interested in eating. Suddenly she felt his lips, his teeth. They were making uninvited contact with her shoulder and she felt an icy fire rise within her. She jumped sideways, out of his reach, and then turned to him with a malicious glare. Her lips curled into a snarl, ears flatted back so far they were hidden. She backed up, still facing him with her angered expression, wanting to put more distance between them. Finally, she could avoid words no longer.
"How dare you! Y-y-you foul, horrible creature! Do not touch me! Do I make that clear?" She began dancing nervously as she talked, feeling a mixture of anger and even a little fear. Who was this stallion who immediately thought he owned her, and knew her well enough to make such suggestive contact with her. It was absolutely unacceptable and she was determined to make sure he knew that. "I will not tolerate this kind of behavior, so if you don't want me to run away right now I suggest you figure that out."

Instead of immediately lashing out, she instead sprung away. He couldn't hide his surprise at her reaction, expecting far more in the way of retaliation than just skittering out from under his touch. Sure, she was fighting mad, but there was just enough fear there to let him know that he would have a hard time regaining what little trust of him she had. He paused to think what he could have done differently, but he wasn't sure he could've. She would have just camped out into her igloo until he went away. At least this way he got to see some emotion, even though he had to poke it out of her.
Clear? Maybe. But I had to get you to talk somehow. I apologize for the fear, at this he stopped himself from asking, but was clearly curious, but I was expecting far more anger and personal injury. He had slipped into an almost formal, almost polite tone of voice. He was still getting over the shock of not being kicked or bit at, I suppose, either that or actually meaning some of it and trying to get his point across.
He just smiled at the comment that rapidly followed the first. He looked at her critically, evaluating if he could keep up with her. I could probably keep up with you darling, but if you talk to me I won't have to go to any drastic measures. And you're pretty much stuck with me, don't insult your own intelligence by thinking otherwise. I'm not actually a mean stallion, but you have admitted you don't have a herd, pardon me when I say not many others would take you, and I like you. Deal with it, talk to me, and maybe you can find someone else to throw at me so you can go away and be left in peace.
He was rather pleased with his speech, and he wondered what in the world she would do about it. Probably just get madder. If she did, he'd just have to keep poking. It probably wasn't smart, but she had just shown him that she wasn't going to take him on unless he really provoked her. And even then, he had some experience. He had been taught not to mess with mares, but the humans weren't around, and she wasn't one of theirs. Then again, he couldn't hurt her. She was pretty, and he liked her. She'd probably use that to her advantage and inflict some damage just so he couldn't follow her as she got out of his land. He'd have to be wary, that was for sure.

As soon as he began talking her anger grew. It was all she could do not to spin around and send a kick flying toward his head, but she wasn't stupid enough to think she could get away with it without enduring some injury herself. Even when the heat of anger coursed through her veins, she managed to keep her head on straight. It was that which had proven to her benefit time and again, and this would be no exception.
She held her haughty stance as he rambled on. The mare only half listened to what he said, not entirely caring. No matter what he wanted, she'd get her way. There was no sense pretending she had an ounce of interest in his words. Instead, she waited for him to stop, and then threw another spiteful remark his direction. "What part of leave me alone did you not understand?"
With that she spun around and bucked, throwing her heels in his direction as a warning, and then ran off. She only went a few strides before stopping, far enough away that she wouldn't have to listen to him, but close enough that she hoped he wouldn't feel the need to chase her. She may have started a game of cat and mouse, but anything was better than enduring more of his conversation and pathetic attempts at convincing her she needed him.

Yep, he just fueled the fire. He had to admit it was what he expected, but it wasn't what he wanted. He was frustrated, he just wanted to have a decent conversation with her. She was now convinced only that she couldn't get away from him. She was on his land, she didn't deny that, and she wasn't going to leave because she didn't exactly know how.
He listened to her comment, and was smiling and starting to reply when her calculated kick came his way. He spun around, but she hadn't actually intended to hurt him. It was probably his one and only warning. He took off after her, having let her get a head start, but she abruptly stopped. He slowed, not knowing what to think. Was she admitting that she was stuck with him? Just trying to lay down the rules that they had no contact whatsoever? He didn't even know her name, for Pete's sake. HYe slowed to an ambling walk, again getting close. He was at a respectful distance, but he doubted she wanted him any closer than a day's gallop.
I told you I had a thick skull, my dear. His voice was pleasant, with that teasing and/or flirty edge that just grated on her nerves. He wasn't sure what tactic to use now. She was almost to the point where he was fed up enough to leave her alone. He didn't let that show, but after another episode or two, he would just let her go. He would like to think that she would miss his annoying company, but again, he doubted he'd gotten that far into her igloo. She had just picked it up and set it somewhere else, making sure to put up some walls he'd have to somehow get through to even get to it now. Now, let's start over. My name is Nizhoni. What is yours again?

She wanted to lash out as he came closer, approaching the edges of her invisible electric fence. But he stopped, seeming to be thinking. No doubt scheming his next move, his next attempt to win her approval. As she'd already made clear, that wasn't happening anytime soon. She sighed, and began grazing, one wary ear flicked toward him just in case he tried anything silly again.
He didn't touch her, but he clearly didn't understand what she'd yelled his direction. The sorrel mare lifted her head and turned to face him, eyes blazing with annoyance. "Are you dumb, or just plain stupid?" Then she laughed. Not really an amused laugh, more like an evil cackle. "Oh right, I guess that question answers itself,"
|
she smirked. He wouldn't leave her alone, that much was clear. He may not be invading her personal space anymore, but his conversation seemed to seek her out and stick to her like glue. She sighed again, this time more audibly, and decided that the only way to win with him was going to be giving him a taste of his own medicine. "Since you seem incapable of taking the intelligent way out of this, I guess you leave me no choice." She gave him a seductive, yet still snarling, grin. "My name is Malaika, and you'd do well to remember and not ask again. Now that the introductions are over, let's cut to the chase. Stop me if I'm wrong here, but this is the way I've figured things." She walked closer to him as she talked, getting close enough that she was able to lower her voice into a sort of eerie tone, almost whispering into his ear. "You're a new stallion around here, no doubt new to the ways of the wild. You think you're on top of the world. But yet, you have no mares yet, which tells me you're in a bit of a sore spot. And for some reason, you think I fit into this plan of yours. Am I right, or am I right?" She stepped back and puffed up proudly, knowing she'd probably just stuck a dagger into his cocky ego. Good, he'd do well to be taken down a peg or two. She must take pleasure in being mean. It was an odd realization, and again he wondered if her parents or someone had snubbed her as gleefully as she was trying to snub him. It would definitely account for the way she did it. She was trying to get the satisfaction that they got out of it, or at least seemed to get out of it. But again, he was over thinking it, theorizing, because he really didn't know if she was just like this, or had a reason to be. Some mares were just Ice Queens, and that she was.
Then she came closer, and he had to stifle a chuckle. After all that fuss about him invading her space, and she was doing it to him? It was a delicious change, but he immediately wondered what she was going to do to him or what her plan was. It could be nothing good, she had already established that her motives were not for the common good. He flicked an ear to better hear her, amused at her conclusions. He tried to stifle it, because she was obviously proud of herself, which she should be, but she knew him only as long as he knew her, and that wasn't very long. Couldn't she just believe he liked her?
Right about parts of that, my dear. he replied, failing to keep his amusement inside. I am intelligent, perhaps not in the ways of mares, I'll give you that. I won't forget your name; I don't think I'm capable of that. Yes, I'm a new stallion around here, no, I'm not as new to the wild as you may think. That's a bit of a story. And Malaika, at this he leaned toward her ear, I just got here, I just found and claimed this land, and you are the first mare I have set my eyes on since I arrived. He leaned back. Probably one of the prettier ones I've ever seen. Especially with that amazing blue eye. He sent her his most charming grin, one that would slide right off the iciness of her heart, but Nizhoni couldn't stop himself. She would just have to deal with them plunking in and falling off.

Her plan seemed to backfire, and it slightly unnerved her that Nizhoni had kept his cool. Her words seemed to roll right off of him, not dampening his spirits in the least. He kept putting on the charm, or what she suspected most mares would find charming at least. She rolled her eyes and stepped away from him, again pinning her ears as he moved into her space. "Please. You clearly think far too much of yourself."
She flicked her tail and stepped farther away, pacing back and forth beside him. Her ears were still flattened and she turned to give him a sidelong glare, nose squishing as she made a displeased face. To be quite honest, she didn't know what to do. Oh, she'd really gotten herself into a predicament this time.
Malaika didn't want to stay with him, but at the same time she was beginning to sense there was no escape. Perhaps she could hang around, just to appease him....but only for awhile. She sensed that with his personality he'd take offense if anyone else tried to harm her while under his command, so at least she'd have a little protection. And while she hated the wretched climate of the dusty prairie, having a place to call home for awhile might actually beat out the constant traveling she was accustomed to. He would think he had won, but as long as she was the one really winning, let him think whatever he might.
She turned back toward him, giving him an icy stare from her already cool blue eye. "You just don't give up do you? It's one line after another with you. I suppose there are some mares who would fall at your feet, but let's get one thing straight - I'm not one of them."

She moved closer to him again, though not as close as the last time. "You've made it plain that you plan on keeping me here - forcibly against my will. Care to fill me in on what other plans you've made for me?" The mare gave him a calculating stare, trying to decide once and for all what she thought of him. Was he ultimately good, and honestly up to no harm with her? Or was he just playing it cool, casually making flirting attempts, until he got what he wanted? Not that it mattered. Even if she decided to stay there, she'd make sure to keep out of his way and find solitude, within the boundaries of his land. He may think his rules were winning, but really, hers would always come first. As they stood there, a gentle breeze broke the otherwise sweltering heat of the summer sun, bringing a clean scent. She smelled him, but nothing else. Perhaps, if no one else was nearby, it wouldn't be such a horrible place to take shelter. [/blockquote] - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - -
