Powerful legs caressed the land, propelling the large mare across the land. Thick neck was arched, dark eyes looking carefully but curiously at her surroundings. Emery was a sight to behold. Her build was thick, but she was a contradiction. Despite her thick legs, sturdy body, and large bones, she moved lightly, with agility and grace. It was part of her breed, she only knew she was different from seeing other lighter horses with the agility she had, and horses as heavy as she was without it. Her movement was smooth, smooth enough the bird that kept pace with her could land if he pleased. He liked to perch on the crest of her neck, but he had taken to flight awhile back to get something to eat. Emery was a gentle mare, and she could hardly stand seeing him kill something to eat it.
Emery stretched her legs further, increasing her pace, keeping an eye on the bird above her. He started to fall behind, but picked up his pace, letting out his familiar klee-ing as he picked up on what she was doing. While in a dive he could get to going faster than her, it was fairly even when it came to racing. Emery stretched out into a full run, not fearing the flat ground beneath her. She could smell water, and that was the only reason she led herself to this race, with her black coat that seemed to attract all the warmth that the sun gave.
The Kestrel was forced to flap his wings rapidly, striving to keep up. Today was Em's day, and she slowly pulled ahead of the small falcon. Her thick tail floated behind her, the headwind that was causing her victory ruffled her long mane behind her. Her hooves were at this point pounding the ground beneath her, her sides beginning to heave and nostrils wide. Her lungs were so much larger than Pyrrhus's, but he was also a much smaller bird. She set her eyes on the lake that had appeared, milking her muscular body for everything it could give her. Pyr was still steadily falling behind when she sent up water in all directions when she crashed into the water. She kept going until she was submerged, and then returned to the shallows.
Pyr dived at her and clutched her thick mane, not actually hurting her, but practicing when he needed to scare someone. Emery dug with a foreleg at the water, sending water up toward him and up more toward her already wet back. Pyr had to shake his feathers to get all the water off, but he glared at her before he started to preen. Em, I am perfectly capable of keeping myself clean. She just laughed, and the small bird huffed. Emery knew it was goodnatured, so she settled down to drink without worrying that he would start trying to scratch out her eyes or something else. He was a small bird, but he was still a predator. His journeys away from her only confirmed that. She loved the little guy though, and their friendship was as solid as it got.

[/blockquote] The gray stud had been perusing other lands, looking for something. Mares. He had come from a strong herd, mostly because of the strength and love the mares had. Now it was time to develop his own herd, and he wanted one as tightly knit as the one he grew up in. As he trotted across the vast expanse, he saw a dark blur speeding across the land. The shape was equine, and from what he could tell the grace was feminine. And though it seemed she had a heavier boned frame she moved with grace and agility.
He picked up his pace, hoping to cut across the land and cut her off. His light hooves picked up the dust buried in the grasses, and his dark tail flew like a banner behind him. He hadn't had a chance to race like this in a long time, since he was a yearling colt! Already he liked this mare for bringing his youth out of him without meaning to. As he neared her, he let out a whinny. He didn't like being snuck up on and he figured that she wouldn't appreciate it either. He slowed to a canter, and snickered when he saw her face as she splashed into the water. He pulled up at the shore, and whinnied, pawing at the waters edge. She seemed to really enjoy the water.
------ Muse: Curious... Word count: 208 FYI: He has put a claim on a land, so after a while they could head back there... But we can wait for a number of posts. Let's let this work itself out.

Thick set mare looked up, seeing the light boned stud that stood before her. He was delicate looking, as if a nudge from her head would send him toppling over. She was taller, definitely heavier, but her ears were pricked. She flicked her tail, slopping more water on her side. She pawed the water, inviting him in. The sun was already beginning to dry her out, doing it's best to keep her from the cool comfort she sought from the water. Pyr finally got his feathers back where they should be, and looked curiously up at the visitor. Em, you could crush him with one kick. the bird said, looking at him. Pyrrhus was tiny compared to them both, but he was used to the giants of the bird world looking down on him. In this case, it was Emery who had the chance to look down on another of her species.
Emery laughed. Don't mind Pyrrhus, he has a set view of the world and tries to make the rest of us see it too. Pyr ruffled his feathers before replying. Emery sees the world differently than most, my friend, but she's a beast when it enters her mind to be. You wouldn't stand a chance. He appeared pleased with himself, being able to gloat about something, even if it wasn't himself. And he did know that if this... refined? would that be a nice way of saying it? stud tried to hurt him, Em would come to his defense. So in a way, he was provoking, in a way he was seeing what this stud was made of.
Despite the size difference, both the horse and the bird held tremendous sway on each other's lives. They might not always do what the other tells them to, but they always listened. Their perspectives were vastly different, from the way they saw the world to the way they chose to eat. But perhaps it was their differences that made them such close friends.
Black mare spoke up again. Well, I guess we should introduce ourselves. Before she could continue, Pyr spoke up. Since you didn't introduce yourself, she means. Emery put her ears back in a silent threat to shake her neck, his current perch, which he countered by shrieking his familiar call playfully, ready to take flight if she wasn't bluffing. Which she was. I'm Emery, and my friend here is Pyrrhus, who is going to mind his own business. continued the mare complacently. The Kestrel just laughed. And when have I ever done that, my dear? he asked affectionately. This time Emery did shake her head, and the shrieking bird took flight, if only for a moment. He landed right between her ears, nibbling on one of them for good measure.

[/blockquote] He watched the pair curiously, for he now saw the mare had a feathery friend. He had very little familiarity with birds, in general, besides seeing the occasional sight of them flying overhead or the annoying squawk from a blue jay hiding in the trees. Seeing the pair together was unexpected.
He moved closer to the water, and introduced himself. I am Armado. A pleasure to meet you Emery. And Pyrrhus? Hello young fello. He thought it rather comical that the little fellow was so pushy, although he could relate. He was born fine framed, somewhat like a girly mare, but inside the small ones are typically a fire and determination that none with a large frame can compare to. Yes, he saw Py's point that one kick from her powerful quarters would render a horrible injury, but his fine framed offered him speed and agility that could not be matched. But he didn't want to provoke mares to kick at him! He respected females very much, being brought up well by his mother.
He looked at the mare curiously. She was the bold color of black, not a hint of lightness in her coat. And her eyes were deep, hiding secrets perhaps? All mares had secrets of course. He knew that much. And they hid them very well. But he was curious about those secrets, about this mares history, and what she wanted in life. He wanted to start a herd, a powerful herd with a powerful lead, and as he watched this mare he thought Maybe she could help me lead? But first he had to convince her he was worth her time. He always was a little too eager...
So he stepped closer to her and then tried to surprise her by splashing water in a huge spray that covered them all! He was still young, and liked to have fun. He wanted to see if these mare was young enough, at least in her soul, to be able to have fun with. After all, it was no fun being bored all his life! After the splash he raced out of the water and waited for her with devious eyes on the edge, just daring her to come after him! He reared, and whinnied loudly and powerfully, Come and Get Me!

Emery dipped her large head at his introduction. Armado. She had to admit, it made her think of an armadillo. The problem was he wasn't brown or in anyway resembling an armadillo, so the thought was in and out of her brain in the time it took for him to say hello to Pyr. The bird ruffled his feathers indignantly. The stallion was calling him young. Humph. Birds didn't live as long as horses, Pyr was as old or older than the small stud before him. Way prettier too, but Pyr was rather fond of his plumage.
Em stood modestly by while he looked her over, taking the time to drink more of the cool water. Her mane looked shaggy with the water separating strands, but it was already starting to dry at the tips. Sumner was probably her least favorite season. Being black had its advantages when night fell, but during a hot summer all Emery wanted to do was splash in water all day, as she was attempting to do, or find a shady forest where she could camp out without getting unbearably hot.
She jumped back, as much as she could being up to her knees in water, when he splashed her. Her surprise quickly turned to mischief, while Pyr klee'ed off and found a nearby bush to preen water yet again off his feathers and watch from a safe distance while the two played. He wasn't a fan of baths when they weren't his idea, least of which two in the period of less than an hour.
Emery refused to budge from her watery throne, even when he whinnied his challenge. I may be tall, Armado, but even my strides won't keep up with a horse built for speed. Her build was more for strength, for grace. She had agility, but that came from a long line of carefully bred horses with the temperament and versatile build for anything. He was from those who were built for pure speed, something she didn't lay claim to. Just because she was big, she could stretch her legs and get going pretty fast, but unless this stud could run like a turtle, he'd run away from her in an instant. Instead of accepting his challenge, she backed up deeper into the water, but not much. She still needed the ability to move around if he came in after her, which was inevitable unless he changed what he was asking.
ooc- Sorry for the late reply, school was making my muse hide. x3
